I Don' Want to Grow Up

In my personal opinion, I think it is awesome that a group of 20 somethings can still be super excited about playing MASH. If you are dying to know, I will be living in my London Mansion, with my high school crush (who I married wearing Ivory and honeymooned in Greece) my pug, and my 8 children (I totally have a nanny). I ride to my job as a fashion designer, where I make billions, on my vintage cruiser bike with a big ol' basket on front. Pretty sweet.

I'm heading home in about two weeks to go to my cousin's wedding. While home, I'll be seeing doctors, picking up things I need and other similar things. One such event that is of the utmost importance will be getting my hair cut. My hair is in dire need of some lovin' and I am really jonesing to dye it. I haven't dyed my hair in about two years now because I had gone crazy with the dye and my tired, damaged hair needed a break. Also, I wanted to see what my natural hair color was because, frankly, I couldn't' remember. (For those who are curious, it is like an ashy, light brown/dark blond.) Any who, today I decided to play with Instyle.com's virtual makeover game? application? time killer? But instead of using the pre chosen models, I uploaded a photo of yours truly to get a real idea of how something would look with my bizarre features. What this means for you, dear reader, is that you get to see my top five favorite looks! Heck yes, is right. They let you save and email and print and do all kinds of fun things with your images. They also let you do make-up which was interesting to say the least. I tried on a bunch of celebrity make-up combos and pretty much looked c-c-c-crazy in all of them. I also tried on different eye colors and found that I would look delightful with green and brown eyes. I did not look quite as good with violet eyes as I would have liked. Bummer! Well, without further ado, here are the photos and do please tell me which is your favorite; it very well may influence my final decision! Bonus poins if you can guess the celeb! Provided the hair cut and color comes out well, I will post pics here for you to see.

Happy Mom's Day!

I have this fabulous picture of my mom making one of those priceless faces that only can be described as charmingly hilarious. I would like to post it here today in her honor but in deference to her pride, I will not. I hope all of you do something for your mom to make her feel appreciated, even if your on the outs. Even if what you do is not do something that would probably embarrass her.

Love Means Never Having to Say Your Sorry

I hope you believe that because instead of apologizing for missing a post yesterday I am just going to give you two posts today! As some of you know, I am looking to get into FIT's 1 Year accessory program. Preparing essays, gathering information and working on my portfolio has been consuming my life pretty thoroughly for the last few weeks. I have just about completed the process and will hopefully be hearing from them soon. Any how, my first post is the essay I wrote for my application. I hope you enjoy reading it, get something from it, and most importantly, I hope you Think it is good enough to get me in!


What makes you a perfect candidate for FIT?
Why are you interested in the major you are applying to?

“The Perfect Pair”

I think it is fair to say that life is full of twists and turns and unexpected surprises.
It was a surprise to me that I chose to go to Savannah College of Art and Design, a school
my mother practically dragged me to visit and hundreds of miles farther than I had ever
imagined I would go from my home. I was surprised that I felt so comfortable in the
Production Design department, where I was able to combine my love of story telling and
fashion. Furthermore, I was surprised to find that through the various jobs I have worked
on and through the people I have met in those jobs and elsewhere, I have realized what I
deeply love is to create and to make accessories.
I love how the special items (shoes, bags, gloves, hats, etc…) really function as
the defining elements of a person’s style and character. I love that different accessories
can change the tone of an outfit from casual, to professional to a night on the town. In my
work in the costume world and in my experience as a fashion devotee, I find they are the
things that can bring the singular greatest joy to a person. I am seeking to gain the
necessary technical skills, business knowledge, industry connections and material
sourcing information that when I add my personal design sensibilities, I will have a solid
foundation for success. I deeply feel that FIT can provide all of those things and is the
best place for me.
I could continue with why FIT would be a good fit for me, however, I, too, am a
good fit for FIT. I moved to New York City in September of 2008, to pursue working in
the costume field. As a self starter, who is hardworking and motivated to achieving my
goals, I have been able to work in a variety of jobs from film to theater to assistant styling
commercials during a time of a recession across the nation which I am a proud of.
Through these experiences I have gained many useful skills that will serve me well as a
FIT student; Skills such as being a fast learner, task oriented and able to work in a fast
pace environment, organizational skills, as well as budgeting abilities as well as my
eagerness to contribute. I always maintain a professional, polite and positive attitude
towards my work, especially in stressful situations which I am well aware exists in the
fashion industry.
Working in regional summer theater, I have learned the value of working with
small budgets under tight deadlines which I believe can make or break the fashion
business. I also feel that because I am older (than the typical high school graduate) and
have had a successful college experience under my belt, I know that I can handle the
challenging curriculum set out by FIT. I can use the sewing skills and other construction
techniques I have learned in my work. I don’t view going back to school as a step
backward or starting over. I see it as an opportunity to continue to grow as a costume

designer as well as having the potential of opening doors for me into the fashion world,
that otherwise might remain unavailable to me. FIT offers so many varied opportunities
to its students; I know if I’m accepted, I will take full advantage of them. I am certain as
a student I can make a contribution that FIT and I, too, can be proud of.
It was a surprise to me that upon discovering and taking an introductory
shoemaking class at Hunter College, I felt a genuine creative renewal in the design and
construction process. I have found the handful of classes I have taken at FIT as a
noncredit student extremely enjoyable and beneficial. I always get excited by the vibrant
student community, the vast activities and opportunities at the school, and the creativity
buzzing in the air. This may be a nontraditional reference but, in Sister Act 2: Back in the
Habit, Whoopi Goldberg’s character helps a wayward student by giving this advice: If
when she wakes up all she can think about is singing, then she should be a singer. When I
wake up, all I can think about is making accessories. I want to do all in my power to
make that desire a reality and FIT is where I can make it happen.

As far back as I can remember, I have always known I should live in England. Like Legolas to the sea*, so too I feel that upon visiting the Fair Isle, I would never return. I want the storied history of this once world dominating empire to be outside my door. I want to see castles. I want to roam alone on heather clad hills. I want to see the place that has inspired so many of my most cherished children’s literature like Narnia, Hobbits** and Harry Potter***. I want to live in a sweet cottage on the outskirts of a small but vibrant city by the sea. I will ride my mint green cruiser bike with its large wicker basket in front into town to pick up my groceries. I will have a garden of veggies and flowers. I will have a madcap assortment of tea pots and china even though I don’t drink tea. I will instead use them for coffee and juicy juice. I will drink my milk from champagne flutes. Every once a week or so, I will go to my local pub, The Blustery Pig Dog and catch up with all my friends and neighbors. There, I will receive compliments on my vast jumper collection and they charming old men who look like Santa will say they still don’t know how I make shoes, even though I have explained it several times to them. We will all decorate for Christmas and have paper crowns and party poppers. As I get old, I will grow fat from shepherds pie, scones with fruit and cream, and Yorkshire pudding. I will marry a charming British boy, quite possibly because I just love to hear him speak. He will win every argument. I will take a train to Paris often. I will address letters as such Mathilde Broningwig of Hobblenobton, England and the letter will get there. I will visit if not life in Hobblenobton****. I will relish the city while I work there. I will holiday in the Lake District. I will find fairies in the Lake District. I will wait for when my adventures like Legolas’ will bring me to my land across the sea.

♥ BE BOP A LULA ♥

The official description for LULA Girl of My Dreams Magazine is as follows: "Lula is created for people of the world who love fashion, music, art, & make believe. Lula is gentle, whimsical and ethereal in tone, mixing high fashion to fall in love with and interviews that feel like late night chats with people you wish you knew. Editor: Leith Clark. With international stylists, photographers, musicians, artists, illustrators, LULA is a beautiful magazine that is not only a forum for beautiful work and fresh ideas, but that reads like an honest, funny, and inspirational friend." What this fails to mention is that it is my absolute all time favorite, life affirming magazine. It only comes out twice a year and for the last 2 weeks or so I have been on pins and needles waiting for the spring 2010 issue to arrive from England (where it's published) and thankfully, for everyone, it came in last evening. Before Lula, I was utterly unaware that there was such a thing as style based magazines; let alone one that featured the kind of art, people, and fashion that I am surrounded by in my dream world. Lula is everything that I aspire to be. This is it's 10th issue and it's fifth anniversary. To celebrate, Leith Clark and staff created 7 different covers inspired by 7 different strawberry shortcake characters portrayed by 7 different models styled by 7 different design houses favored by Lula*. The issue I have features Charlotte di Calypso dressed by Moschino portraying Lemon Meringue (the ditsy model from New York City. Yea!). Can't decide which to get? Never fear, the entire photo series is in the issue. Lula has become a collectors item because of it's beauty, quality, and limited printing. This is not just my own feeling, go to eBay and see how much back issues go for. Also, I can attest to this because I have spent the last year collecting all the back issues and can proudly say I have all ten issues in really good condition (and yes it was totally worth it). Lula is magical for so many reasons and I could write for hours on end extolling its virtues. I will name a few but I dont want to give everything away and ruin all the magic. Each issue features a different bracelet or necklace on the spine, Lula sometimes features interesting guest editors who curate different issues, and it never feels pretentious. So enjoy the photos and please let me know if you would be interested in profiles or pictures of any or all of the back issues.

"`I don't know, Edward,' she answered lamely"

Lamely - in a weak and unconvincing manner. That pretty succintly sums up how I felt the old title and description fit me as a person. I can be girly and whimsical, have no fear. But I can't be those things all the time. It's simply not in my nature. As for the new title, I chose LAME for a couple of reasons. 1. I use LAME regularly as part of my vernacular lingo. 2. I like the way it sounds; just like a nice pair of black heels, it goes with just about anything everything (ex. lametastic, lamesauce, lameface etc...)3. Lastly, I have spent the majority of my life as being lame to someone for something. Now don't go and get all verklempt on me and I'll tell you why. The older I get, the more I relish my eccentricites. My Lame-ness makes me awesome, as does yours. In conclusion, while the name has changed the content will remain the same. I will continue to write about things I love and hope that you will love too. Then we can be lame together.

P.S. I picked the above quote because it reminded me of my feelings toward the fictional character Bella Swan of Twilight (LAME!)

I Already Know You By Heart

I love movies. I love the way they can make you feel, the adventures you can take and stories you can learn that you never could otherwise. I like meeting new characters, some that feel like friends, others you love to hate. I like beautiful movies, movies that have been designed so artfully that the production aspect becomes like another character. I, especially love movies that combine all of the above mentioned things. Two such movies that I revisit over and over for inspiration, for a wonderful story, and to see old friends are The Secret Garden (1993) and A Little Princess (1995). These films are based on novels by Francis Hodgins Burnett. They both tell stories about smart and precocious girls who make the best of their different situations, find love and friendship, and learn what is truly important in life. Now the films do vary a bit from the books but they are so well done that I and even the most critical of viewers don't mind. Each movie has its own unique style that brings to life the spirit and the magic within the stories without ever being silly or unbelievable. And what is great about these films is that they are magical without literally being fantasy films. I think that is a rare trait in films these days, particularly for children's films. They are filled with charm, humor, humanity and wonder. I only saw these films for the first time a few years ago which speaks volumes of their success. I have seen many movies, that came out when I was a child, later in my life and they simply don't hold up. Basically friend, you need to go out right now and rent these movies. You won't regret it. To get you in the mood, I have collected some images from the movies to inspire you. [*side note. I wanted to include a photo of the decorated orange attic from A Little Princess but was unable to find a good one. In a perfect world, I will have a room decorated in similar manner. My entire house in fact will be literar-ily themed. Also a second side note is that while I have never seen it, there is a sequel called Back to the Garden (2001) starring Camilla Belle, who small world enough had a small role in A Little Princess. I do not support the viewing of this movie as the plot suggests several things that I personally do not hold with; Mary marries Colin (perposterous, Dickon all the way), although Mary has turned Misselthwaite Manor into a home for orphans, the garden has been locked up again and needs saving (ridiculous), and lastly, when the key to the garden gets lost seemingly for good in a pond, a door magically appears so that the orphans can all go in and with their love bring back the garden (the beauty of the original is that it is NOT a fantasy, so where pray tell is this magic door coming from? hmm? Anyways, Thank you for bearing with me.]

Being one step behind in techno-trends as usual, I am now just beginning my own blog. I see this as an oppurtunity to put my own unique brand of crerativity out into the world. I would like to post about such things as fashion, art, music, crafts, silliness, photos, books, movies and things that makes the world more beautiful, magical and sometimes wondrously insane.
